New Haven, New London, and other Connecticut Coast citiesCoastal Connecticut that is laced with historical ties is a remarkable place to visit. A maritime influence permeates the region. Mystic, an old harbor town offers visitors a living look at its pass with the Mystic Seaport Museum. The city of New Haven is well known for the wonderful Yale University. Yale is the third oldest college in the United States. The Yale Center of British Art and the Yale University Art Gallery house beautiful paintings. New Haven was founded in 1638 by a group of wealthy Puritans from London at a large natural harbor at the mouth of the Quinnipiac River and developed a strong economy based on shipping and in later years, it was based on industry. New haven churned out Winchester Rifles, musical instruments, tools, carriages, and corsets. Today, very little manufacturing remains in New Haven and the city have struggled for years to revitalize to redevelop it. It is an uneasy place because it is half tension ridden urban wasteland and half Ivy League idyll. Drug wars, homelessness, and poverty notwithstanding, blacks, whites, Italians, Irish, and Asians co-exist uneasily. The city's ethnic diversity and the great vitality provided by the much maligned Yalies, makes it a great place to spend some time.

A self guided walking tour of downtown passes along prosperous Huntington Street where four adjacent Greek revival mansions as labeled Wale Oil Road. If you love swimming and sunbathing, the Ocean Beach Park has a sand beach and a saltwater pool as well as a wooden boardwalk to enjoy day or night. New London was the birth place of boozy playwright Eugene O'Neil. His childhood home the Monte Cristo Cottage is open for tours. Waterford, an acclaimed testing ground for playwrights and actors is a place where visitors can take pot luck and watch often experimental and new shows that are often in rehearsal.
