Majestic Nature and Historic Sites of Southfield and Traverse City AreasSouthfield is located in southeastern Oakland County in the township of the same name. This area was first settled in 1823 by John Daniels. A post office was established there ten years later. The potential water power of the River Rouge originally attracted people to the area. The community steadily grew because of its relationship to Detroit, and became a major player in the development of the auto industry.
In 1958, the area incorporated into a city due to urban sprawl. Its organization afterwards was carefully planned to balance zoning between residential and business areas, with an emphasis on attracting business. These efforts were successful so that today, Southfield is considered to be one of Michigan's leading corporate communities. The current city hall was built in 1964 as part of the new Civic Center complex, also home to Southfield's police headquarters.
The Civic Center was expanded in 1971 to include a sports arena with swimming pool. Evergreen Hills Golf Course was added in 1972 and in 1978, a new public safety building, the Southfield Pavilion and a new court building. In 2003, an expanded and redesigned Southfield Public Library opened to the public on the Civic Center grounds, featuring state-of-the-art facilities. The main branch of the River Rouge runs through Southfield. The city has municipal parks and recreation facilities which were largely developed in the 1970s, including Beech Woods Recreation Center and John Grace Community Center. Sweeping for 64 miles in a golden arc along the clear blue waters of Lake Michigan, 23 miles west of Traverse City, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is a national treasure enjoyed by more than a million visitors each year.
Its beauty, uniqueness and the many ways it has for visitors to experience it, make the Dunes justifiably popular with residents of and visitors to the area. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore includes massive sand dunes, watersheds, stream corridors, inland lakes, forests, and islands with the remains of many shipwrecks. Visitors to the area enjoy beautiful vistas while hiking, biking or driving routes along the dunes.
